Centre for Functional Nanostructures (CFN)
The DFG-Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) represents both the name of our program and its vision: Nanoscience needs to be turned into nanotechnologybefore it can reach its full potential as a key technology of the 21st century. The CFN plays a role in the first crucial steps of turning nanoscience from a pure science to a practical science with real-world applications.
Our aim is to realize functional nanostructures, with focus on optical, electronic, biological, and energy conversion/storage functions. If any of these applications have just a small fraction of the impact that silicon technology (emerging from “Silicon Valley”) has had on our society, the upper Rhine valley might soon be more widely known as “Nano Valley”.
